NORMAL RAINS EXPECTED FOR MOST AREAS IN 2013/14

The 2013/2014 seasonal rainfall outlook has shown that the whole country is expected to receive largely normal with a tendency to above-normal rains during the months of January, February and March 2014. Presenting the forecast, the Department of Meteorological Services senior meteorologist, Ms. Esther Jansen said the normal values would range from 220 milimetres in the northern parts of the Central District to 350 milimetres in the northern parts of the Chobe District. In the extreme eastern parts of the Central District, she said, normal values would range from 200 milimetres to 260 milimetres in the northern parts of northern district. She added that in the extreme southern parts of the Kgalagadi district, the normal values would range from 170 milimetres to 240 milimetres in the northern parts of the Ghanzi district.

Ms Jansen also said the forecast for October to December 2013 indicated an increased likelihood of normal with a tendency towards above-normal rainfall over the eastern parts of the country. These areas, she said, included the southern parts of the Central District, North East, South East, Eastern parts of Kweneng and the eastern parts of the Southern District.

The remaining areas such as Kgalagadi, Ghanzi, Ngamiland, Chobe, northern parts of Central, western parts of Kweneng, as well as the western parts of Southern District were expected to experience normal with a tendency to below-normal rainfall.

Ms, Jansan further said normal to above-normal rains were also expected over the east and the northern parts of the country during the months of November 2013, December 2013 and January 2014. These areas, she said included the Central District, North East, Ngamiland and Chobe. She said the Kgalagadi, Ghanzi, western parts of Kweneng as well as the western parts of the Southern District were also still expected to experience normal to below-normal rainfall. In addition, she said, the western parts of the country which included Kgalagadi, Ghanzi, western parts of Kweneng as well as the western parts of the Southern District were expected to receive normal to above-normal rains, during the months of December 2013, January 2014 and February 2014.
