Hi
If you think the price for a Irridium sat phone is to steep, then maybe you should have a look at this one

I got myself one and it's really great quality and value for the bucks, the loooong lasting battery life (much better than the irridium) is a bonus

Hi Henry,
375 GBP that's the equivalent of some 430 Euro's. That's a very good price indeed! Did you have to pay extra for import-taxes to Denmark? I might get one for myself for that kind of money...
Cheers,
Hans

To be very exact, I ordered this with 120min pre-paid units (minutes). - expires in december 2014 as I recall, that's okay with me.

Also they offer free sms -> Phone from their website, and they also offers "some" tracking functionality - it's not as sophisticated as from the competition though, I'll look in to that as some point before our trip in may, this is great news for our concerned family
The price is
£468.00 Including VAT at 20% hence inside EU, you will not (I didn't) have to pay any tax in NL - shipping is 30£ with TNT and T&T - mine took about 4-5 days to arrive incl. a weekend, so pretty it's fast. According to globalsat - the price on the phone is about to rise so (if one can trust a seller

) maybe you should get yours asap. - but please don't blame me if he just pulled a "sales trick" on me.
I believe you are running a company, so you'll be able to deduct tax either way (UK or NL TAX)
IMHO, compared to competition, this is indeed a bargain, and the sat coverage is more than sufficient for travels in Africa.

Well, we used this phone on our trip back in May/June and we was very pleased with it, if lasts very very long on the battery.
We had a car break down in the middle of nowhere and needed to call for road assistance, worked perfect, my wife for once appreciated my gear 110%
Some advices on using sat phones:
- If you want to stay "on-line" while driving you'll need an external antenna, (of course) you very often lose sat connection if you just have it laying inside the car.
- If you need road assistance, you might consider making a first call, and then continue the "conversation" by SMS (you pre-paid minutes will last much longer).
- Pre-program all important numbers from home, e.g. insurance, rescue, family etc.
- and make sure to get a 24/7 cell phone number for the road assistance hotline.
- This phone has a built-in "send position" VERY VERY handy feature when you are off-road and break down

- Always keep the phone charged and ready, not somewhere in a suitcase or backpack
- As far as I know, you cannot SMS directly from a GSM phone to a SAT phone, but with this phone/operator your family can use the free Mail 2 SMS service
