Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning could be in store for northern Botswana over the next few weeks.

Maun and other areas of Ngamiland will experience unsettled weather this weekend and next week. The Department of Meteorological Services says its updated seasonal rainfall forecast for January to March indicates that the country is expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall. It is expected that La Nina will have an influence on the weather and climate systems (patterns) over Botswana although it is not the only influencing factor of rainfall activity. Recent storms have resulted in lightning striking signage and trees over a wide area of Ngamiland. A large sign at the Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital in Maun was thought to have been struck by lightning and was totally burned out (pictured). Storms also resulted in water accumulating in pools (pictured) which council workers tried to drain off by digging trenches. However, as the trenches were not completed, pumping equipment has had to be brought in to clear the water.
