Mobile phone coverage

Post by kingshaka » Sat Oct 16, 2010 6:56 pm

Mobile phones cannot be used in some parts of Namibia. Although coverage is wide, the population density is sparse and it is not economically feasible to provide transmitters to cover the entire country. The system used is the GSM system. All cellphones must be GSM compliant.

Namibia has two cellular operators, MTC and Leo.
Prepaid packages are available.
Prepaid mobile internet packages are available.
Leo uses Blackberries.
Query reception in remote areas with local operators and / or accommodation establishments before reporting coverage to travellers.

Notes on the coverage map and mobile reception

The map above is a rough indication of coverage, drawn from maps provided by the mobile service providers, reported correct at October 2010. Use the map as a guideline only. Expect to receive reception on most major highways, all major cities and many towns and villages. Do not expect to receive reception at some of Namibia's most isolated traveller attractions. Variation in coverage depends on terrain, building structures, atmospheric conditions and weather. Use the reception strength indicator on the handset to ascertain the likelihood of being able to place a call.
