Daily satellite images of Botswana

Post by John54 » Sun Sep 19, 2010 10:20 pm

Nasa provides free near real-time images of the Earth on a daily basis for purposes such as crop growth and fire monitoring. It is known as the Modis Rapid Response System.
Attached a low-res image of Botswana and parts of surrounding countries, covering an area of about 1200 by 900 km. This image is available in resolutions from 2000m/pixel up to 250m/pixel. The hi-res image, taken September 16th, shows lots of details like forest fires, roads, settlements, rivers, lakes and borders. It is interesting to monitor the annual floods in the area.

Attached also some snapshots of the hi-res image, with landmark names added for orientation. Dark brown patches are recent fires, lighter brown patches are burned areas some weeks or months ago. Note the recent flooding of the Mababe Depression by the illusive Savuti river and the Khwai river, and the progress of the Boteti river to the Makgadikgadi pans. Both lake Ngami and lake Liambezi still hold lots of water now. What will the 2011 flooding bring?
