Update: Savuti & Moremi track conditions (End of August)

Post by come-along.nl » Sat Aug 28, 2010 8:25 pm

Here the latest info that I've got:

1. Savuti Channel August 20

The deepest parts are 40-50 cm. It's not a problem at all. Big rocks but not too bumpy.

It looks to me that there will be a kind of bridge build at Savuti. Buildingmaterial all over the place.
The Savuti Marsch has quite a few tracks non negotiable.

2. South Gate - Xakanaxa via 3rd Bridge
and back 21.8.2010 - 24.8.2010

I spoke to the rangers at Mababe Gate and asked them if we could go straight for North Gate. They told us that this was not possible: "Flooded". So we drove via Mababe village, South gate via 3rd Bridge to Xakanaxa. The Ranger at South Gate gave us helpfull tips how to drive this track.

Other comments:
1th Bridge: drive over the bridge (easy)
2nd Bridge: Keep to the left.
3rd Bridge: Go over the bridge and then straight on through the waterpool behind it.
4th Bridge: They are still busy with the new bridge. Watercrossing here are best made by sticking to the left and over the old bridge. Past the bridge some pools.

Around Xakanaxa there are a lot of places still under water. In the direction of North Gate we drove to Paradise Pools and went back. Still a lot of water...

Check all watercrossings on foot before entering by car. There are some deep sections!

In mid august, I did cross the water after North Gate and Khwai village to joint Savute and Linyanti. I had a Hilux without snorkel. Water came just a little over the hood.
I was very kindly helped by people from RSA who traveled same way. They hired a local guide that showed them how to cross the 2 waters crossing. The first one is the harder and longer. Then he showed them how to reach the transit road via an old hunter track. This track lead to the new concrete bridge.
It cost them 200 pulas.

To cross the first water : you have to drive straight toward the left pillar and turn right toward the right pillar and then stay on the right side to exit and the right side.
For the second crossing you have to hold the right side and make a curve to exit on right.

They told me, if you miss the way, there are holes 2 meters deep !!!

Again a Big thanks to them to help me to do it
