Savuti & Moremi track conditions (till end of December)

Post by come-along.nl » Sun Nov 07, 2010 5:50 pm

We did the stretch form Khwai Campsite through Mababe Gate on to Savuti on October 25. In the morning we talked to a very friendly DWNP officer at Moremi's North Gate. We asked him wether we could take the track north of Khwai onto Mababe Gate and news about the watercrossing and if they could ne avoided. We met a couple of other selfdrivers that made it through without any major problems. They had water over the bonnet only once... The Ranger that gave us a detailed update on how to take the stretch on. We made a sketch of his story for later use. The information we got was pretty on the mark ;)

See here the tracks we took:

The track has only two minor watercrossings and avoids the deeper one.

At the end of Khwai village:

You cross the Khwai river over the newly constructed Log bridge. Continue through Khwai village and just before the last Hut you take a left turn. Straight ahead you will find a farely deep watercrossing (with concrete slabs in the middle)

Detour No. 1:

After this Detour you will get back at the Transit road. take a short turn to the right through the bush. There you find a watercrossing that needs to be tackle driving as far left as possible.

Detour No. 2:

New concrete Bridge under construction:

The Detour continues through the bush, an open space, again some bush and then you meet the newly contructed concrete bridge.

1. You can now use the brand new Steelbridge to cross the Savuti channel. Watercrossing that was operational is blocked.
2. There are rumours that they intend to built a gravelroad from Maun to Savuti...
3. De stretch Kasane - Kachikau is now tarred.

Received a SMS yesterday from customers that reached Kasane:

"Moremi was muddy but OK. From 4th Bridge towards North Gate not possible other tracks OK. Savuti is fine, very lush and green. Most of the mud is in the North Gate area. Some tracks not accessable. Near Savuti quite a number of waterpools to negotiated. They might become a problem later on when the rains persist..."

That's the story I was told...

Cheers, Hans
