Kubu Island, Campsites closed in 2011?

Post by kingshaka » Wed Aug 25, 2010 9:56 pm

Here's a warning to all of you who have never been to Kubu island in the salt pans in botswana. If you you haven't been there yet i sugest you go there soon as camping on the island will be banned as from sometime next year, they will move the camp 1 km away from the island and you will only be able to visit the island with a guide. They are doing this because some horrid people have written on the baobabs etc...

Returned last week from Khubu. Its not all bad news, though. The new camping area is not far from the current sites and they are installing hot water showers. You have never been pernitted to camp on the "pan-side" at Khubu so I am not sure you will miss anything with this change.

I did not hear about having to have a guide to visit the pan side of the island... so not sure if this is true.

But there are signs of irresponsible idiots driving off-track all over the pans. One of the staff told me that the badly behaved are almost exclusively South Africans - particularly when they are in male-only groups. Our hooligan reputation continues to precede us and there are times when I am not proudly South African!

Its a pity that Khubu will become more tightly regulated but I suppose we all need protection from those SA 4x4'ers that have already done so much damage.
