Ihaha campsite (Chobe Riverfront) Satefy Issues...

Post by kingshaka » Mon Mar 28, 2011 1:33 pm

I was camping In Ihaha last week they now have a police patrol vehicle driving up and down the camps during the night it's nice to have protection but to here a vehicle driving up and down all night is a little annoying
Hmm is this good news?

Is this safety from animals or Namibian's crossing the river?
Have there been any incidents?
Yuk, does not appeal to me at all.
We are making a trip in July and was looking forward to the peace and quite. Am really not impressed

Hi,

It's safety from Namibian's crossing the river. Cases of theft have been reported regularly :(

Hi Hans

I thought that the Namibian issues had been sorted out.
We have visited a couple of times with the most recent being June 2010 and the staff told us that there were no longer issues. We also have had no isues.
Has anybody in the forum been since the police car was implemented?

We have just returned from an awesome trip to Ihaha.
Ablutions were cleaned twice a day and camp sites also cleared of rubbish every day. A bit of a problem with water on our last day - stayed for 5 nights.
The water level was low and we were able to get onto the Lechwe Flats this time round.
Game was abundant both in the camp site and in the park. Saw 2 dead elephants though and hope that this was due to natural causes and nothing else. Also saw a group of lion cubs playing and were fortunate enough to have a leopard sighting. Thousands of buffalo and elephant as per usual and plenty of giraffe. African Wild Cat and Hyena, sable, roan, lechwe and puku.
In terms of the safety at the camp site, we were fortunate enough to have no issues. We were camping at camsite no 3 where the water was quite away from us. However, further up the river where the water is closer, campsite no 10 had an incident where his window was taken out of the vehicle which set the car alarm off and the thieves escaped without taking anything but the window.
The police vehicle is around and we probably saw him on max 2 occasions each evening. He drives along the river front in front of the camp sites. We did not find them a nuisance at all but maybe they need to up their presence down at the river front a bit in view of the incidents.
However, i do not feel that this should deter people wanting to visit Ihaha. It really is beautiful with an abundance of wildlife.
African beauty at it's best.

We have camped at Ihaha on 28/07 (CI8) and on 29/07 (CI5) and it was great.
Only negative remark, we had very strong cold constant wind gales at both nights coming from the south and that is
not nice sleeping in a roof tent.
The police car is still patrolling at night (at least we noticed it on 28/07 and it was also mentioned by the Camp
personell) but we experienced no problems. It is still said that people from "the other side" (NAM) cause problems now
and then. We also saw a military vehicle patrolling the area in day time, but it is the border after all.
We saw people camping and fishing on the other side of the river with mokoro's and motor boats setting their fishing nets.

At 23rd October there was still night patrolling (I've heard them at least 3 times during the night).

Stayed one night (too short) from the 27th of februari to the 28th. The water was remarkebly high :o , up till the campsites ! But it was nice :D , elefants using the campsites 2 and 4 as bathing place in the afternoon (we were at 3).
The personell told that the police patrolled by mokoro due to the high water and indeed the track between the river and the campsites was pretty wet so no patrolling heart. No issues with Namibians were reported by the staff (though I doubt whether they would if any ..).
Stayed here a year before too 2 nights and always felt safe, despite the regular police patrols then. This place is definitely one of our favorites. A beautiful surrounding with campsites that are stunning .. peaceful and an overwhelming view.

At Linyanti the army patrolled over the river with a propellorboat  that was too loud. But jee what is that a nice place to stay. But the road up there from Savuti was pretty bad (deep sand).
