Update: Savuti & Moremi track conditions (Feb. 20)
About the transit road from Mababe to Khwai:
source: Sango Safari CampOnce the clients have crossed the white bridge they must keep driving for approximately 800 metres. they will then get to a crossing there. They must NOT use this crossing as it is very deep. nobody uses that crossing anymore. they will see fresh tracks branching to the left (eastwards). They should keep following these tracks and cross the water where the tracks cross as this is a much more shallow crossing.

Tracks from Savuti to Khwai doable!
Got this message from a customer that recently drove from Savuti towards Khwai (Sango Safari Camp):
The roads from savuti to sango are very doable, no prob at all, moremi roads aren't good, I didn't go to magotho community camp, but the guy at the gate told me not to go because the roads are really bad

Update Moremi track conditions (March - 2012)...
source: 4x4community.co.zaTelephone update of my friend just ariving in Kasane from Moremi. Water levels on the South Gate to 3rd Bridge road quite high and they had to cross some flooded stretches with about 50 cm of water. The Xakanaxa to North Gate route closed still too high water south of Hippo pool and North Gate to Khwai almost 1 meter of water on the crossing outside Khwai village, hence they decided to detour via South Gate and Mababe village. Still raining occasionally in the north.
Note: I have not verified this but the guys are renting my vehicle and given me a feed-back by phone from Kasane.

'Live' Update From Moremi/Savuti - Botswana (March 25)
'Live' Update From Botswana (March 25):
Third Bridge is fairly easy to reach from South Gate. Two watercrossings (depth 50 cm). Direct route from North Gate to Savuti via Khwai Village still closed to the general public. Detour via South Gate & Mababe Village no problems. Magotho was nice and quite with no major 'road-problems'. From Mababe Gate to Savuti very bumpy indeed. This stretch took us 4 hours. Now on our way to Kasane for some shopping and then tonight Ihaha!

Savuti & Moremi track conditions (till end of April - 2012)
source: 4x4communityMaun to Third Bridge via South Gate took us 5hrs with very little game viewing. There is quite a lot of water around and the road had numerous puddles, many detours with twist and turns but nothing serious in terms of water crossings. All the bridges 1,2, and 3 were in good shape and easy to cross. We arrived at 5:30pm and set up camp in what was my favourite camp of the trip. Third Bridge is definitely a highlight (and far preferable to Xakanaxa in my opinion). We stayed here 3 nights. The ablutions are great and the running water was a real luxury after CKGR water rations. (we budgeted 5l per person per day in CKGR which was enough for drinking, cooking, washing and bathing) Took a 2hr boat ride from Third Bridge (cost is 500 pula per hour for boat and guide) which would probably be better done from Xakanaxa as it takes an hour to get our of the small channels into some open water from Third Bridge where there is very little to see from an animal and birding perspective. 3 amazing nights at Third Bridge where we had nightly visits from hyeanas, a side striped jackal and hippos. Also heard lion and leopard. Then headed to Xakanaxa for 2 nights, which I found a bit disappointing after Third Bridge. The mopane forests enroute are incredible. The campsites at Xakanaxa are not as nice and the nearby boat station means constant vehicle traffic going past your campsite, besides giving the camp a bit of a fishing village kind of feel. Had some good elephant sightings in camp. The general game viewing was not great on the whole at this time of year, there is so much water around that it seems everything is really spread out. Birding is incredible though and we notched up close to 190 species, and of course the scenery at this time of year is beautiful. On the mosquito front, I didnt notice any at Third Bridge, but was bitten many times at Xakanaxa even being very careful with anti mozzie pre cautions as it is closer to a lot more water and swamps. When we left Xakanaxa the road to South Gate is excellent and we took 1.5hrs.
